Notes from the Nurse

Welcome to the 09-10 school year.  A few things to  remember:

1. Medications prescription or over the counter may not be given without a note from your doctor.

2. All medication must come in original container or prescription bottles. Medecine in baggies will not be accepted.

3. For our asthmatic children, we would prefer having an inhaler left in the office at school. This way, we always have one whenever your child might need it.

4.  Children sent home with a fever, or have had a fever the night before, need to be fever free for 24 hours, and no vomiting for 24 hours before returning to school. We know that children are most contagious when they have a fever, so by keeping them home you will stop the spread of infection to others.

5. Please stress hand washing with your children, we do!

It is also important to remember that we have children at school with severe food allergies. Most of the time the children have an allergy to peanuts, and tree nuts. Eating items with these ingredients, or items made from these ingredients can cause a serious problem. We have a "peanut and nut free" table in the cafeteria this year. Please check with your child's teacher regarding safe snacks. Generally, it's probably not a bad idea to get into the habit of making treats for groups of children peanut and nut free. Including a list of ingredients of the snack is also helpful so the teachers can double-check the treats. We want to make Haisley school safe for all children.

Please feel free to e-mail me brennan@aaps.k12.mi.us or call me at Haisley. I am at school most mornings.

Have a great year,

Laurelle Brennan, RN CSN
